STOP-DWI Program to Coordinate Super Bowl Weekend DWI Crackdown

Checkpoints and patrols run January 31, 2014 – February 3, 2014

(Binghamton, NY) The Broome County STOP-DWI Program today announced that law enforcement agencies across Broome County will deploy special DWI enforcement patrols to help ensure that our roadways will be safe during the Super Bowl weekend.

According to NHTSA, in 2011, 9,878 people were killed in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes around the country. These crashes were 31 percent more likely to occur on weekends than on weekdays (weekend – Friday 6 p.m. to Monday 5:59 a.m.). In January and February of 2013, 83 drivers were arrested for DWI in Broome County.

“The Super Bowl is one of America’s most highly anticipated sporting events, when friends and family gather in homes, bars and restaurants to celebrate,” said Broome County Executive Debbie Preston. “As Super Bowl Sunday approaches and football fans across Broome County prepare for the game, our STOP-DWI Program and local law enforcement have teamed up to spread the message about designating a sober driver on Super Bowl Sunday, because Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk.”

Broome County STOP-DWI would like to remind residents of the following Super Bowl party tips:

  • Make sure all your guests designate a sober driver in advance, or arrange for alternate transportation to ensure they get home safely;
  • Serve food and include non-alcoholic beverages at the party;
  • Stop serving alcohol at the end of the third quarter and begin serving coffee and dessert;
  • Keep the numbers for local cab companies handy, and take the keys away from anyone who has had too much to drink.
The STOP-DWI Crackdown is comprised of several periods promoted by the New York State STOP-DWI Foundation. These efforts are supported with funding from both the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee and the National Highway Traffic Safety Association.
