Broome County STOP-DWI Program Receives Additional $10,000 for Summertime Crackdowns

Memorial Day checkpoints and patrols run May 23-28, 2013

(Binghamton, NY) The Broome County STOP-DWI Program today announced that as a result of the successful DWI checkpoints conducted by local law enforcement between Halloween 2012 and St. Patrick’s Day 2013, the NYS STOP-DWI Foundation has awarded Broome County an additional $10,000 to continue these crackdowns during the summertime holidays of Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day.

“As a county which has utilized its funds with very positive results, an additional $10,000 can now be allocated to Broome County for the remaining crackdowns,” said Denise Cashmere, Grant Administrator/Project Director for the NYS STOP-DWI Foundation, Inc.

Law enforcement agencies across Broome County will deploy special DWI enforcement patrols to help ensure that our roadways will be safe during the summer. For the first 3 months of 2013, over 140 drivers have been arrested for DWI on Broome County public highways.

“The results obtained in Broome County are a testament to the hard work and dedication of local law enforcement from every jurisdiction in Broome County,” said Chris Marion, Broome County’s STOP-DWI Coordinator. “Without our Troopers, Deputies, and Officers preforming hundreds of hours of overtime to detect and arrest impaired drivers, we would not see this additional funding”.

The STOP-DWI Crackdown is comprised of several crackdown periods promoted by the New York State STOP-DWI Association. These efforts are supported with funding from both the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee and the National Highway Traffic Safety Institute.

“We encourage people to get out and enjoy their summer activities responsibly and to remember if you plan on consuming alcohol, have a plan to and from your destination using a designated driver, taxi, or by walking. Whatever you do, just don’t drive,” said Marion.
